Can the Mott insulator TiOCl be metallized by doping? A first-principles study.

چکیده
We investigate the effect of Na intercalation in the layered Mott insulator TiOCl within the framework of density functional theory. We show that the system remains always insulating for all studied Na concentrations, and the evolution of the spectral weight upon Na doping is consistent with recent photoemission experiments. We predict the Na-doped superlattice structures, and show that substitutions of O by F, Cl by S, or Ti by V (or Sc), respectively, fail to metallize the system. We propose a description in terms of a multiorbital ionic Hubbard model in a quasi-two-dimensional lattice and discuss the nature of the insulating state under doping. Finally, a likely route for metallizing TiOCl by doping is proposed.

Quasi-one-dimensional magnetism in TiOCl and a theory of a lightly doped dimerized insulator
Transition metal oxides with low dimensional geometry have displayed fascinating new phenomena such as high temperature superconductivity and unconventional magnetism. The first part of this thesis is related to this rich and diverse subject, where TiOCl is studied as an example of an S = 1/2 layered Mott insulator. Earlier experiments on this material indicating two-dimensional spin-liquid beh...

Resonating valence bond states in a doped Mott insulator was proposed to explain superconductivity in cuprates in January 1987 by Anderson. A challenging task then was proving existence of this unconventional mechanism and a wealth of possibilities, with a rigor acceptable in standard condensed matter physics, in a microscopic theory and develop suitable many body techniques. Shortly, a paper...
متن کاملElectron–hole doping asymmetry of Fermi surface reconstructed in a simple Mott insulator
It is widely recognized that the effect of doping into a Mott insulator is complicated and unpredictable, as can be seen by examining the Hall coefficient in high Tc cuprates. The doping effect, including the electron-hole doping asymmetry, may be more straightforward in doped organic Mott insulators owing to their simple electronic structures. Here we investigate the doping asymmetry of an org...
متن کاملHartee Fock Symmetry Breaking Effects in La2CuO4: Hints for connecting the Mott and Slater Pictures and Pseudogap Prediction
This work expands the results and derivations presented in a recent letter. It is argued that symmetry breaking Hartree-Fock (HF) solutions of a simple model of the Cu-O planes in La2CuO4, are able to describe the insulator and antiferromagnetic characters of this material. Then, this classical primer of a Mott insulator is alternatively obtained here as an exact Slater insulator within the sim...
متن کاملDoping-driven Mott transition in La1−xSrxTiO3 via simultaneous electron and hole doping of t2g subbands as predicted by LDA+DMFT calculations
The insulator to metal transition in LaTiO3 induced by La substitution via Sr is studied within multiband exact diagonalization dynamical mean field theory at finite temperatures. It is shown that weak hole doping triggers a large interorbital charge transfer, with simultaneous electron and hole doping of t2g subbands. The transition is first order and exhibits phase separation between insulato...
